The device (10) has an image sensor (12) e.g. light travel time sensor, active triangulation sensor and stereoscopic sensor, receiving separation information comprising image data. An evaluation unit (22) detects objects from the data and for tracing of object movement (29) by temporally evaluating other sets of image data. The evaluation unit calculates another separation information by changing image size of an object (28a) by the other set of image data. The evaluation unit is formed such that unit tests the former information based on the latter information of plausibility. An independent claim is also included for a method for visual monitoring by reception of image data.
