PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk drive with a thermal fly-height actuator and to provide an improved method for operating a fly-height actuator. SOLUTION: A heater may be deactivated during a seek operation to minimize the risk of head-disk contacts. When a write command is received, a level of heater power is applied to pre-heat a write head prior to writing an initial data sector. This pre-heating heater power level may be higher than the power level used for writing. Then when writing begins, a lower power level is applied to the heater so that the write head has an optimal head-disk spacing while writing to all data sectors, including the initial data sector. Even if the heater is deactivated during a seek operation, the controller can initiate pre-heating during the last portion of the seek operation before the write head reaches a target track.
