PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device in which display with high contrast can be attained by arbitrarily controlling the pretilt angle of a liquid crystal while preventing occurrence of disclination. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes: a porous silica film 30 formed on the pixel electrode 9 of a TFT substrate; and a columnar structure 60 formed on the porous silica film 30 so as to align a liquid crystal 50 formed while being tilted at a set angle with respect to the porous silica film 30. The porous silica film 30 and the columnar structure 60 constitute an alignment layer 16 for aligning the liquid crystal 50 at a predetermined pretilt angleθ3. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
