The invention relates to a method of treating Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and to compositions for topical application of methylphenidate comprising methylphenidate in a flexible, finite system capable of sticking to the side of topical application wherein the methylphenidate is present in amount of 20 - 180 mg methylphenidate per 2 to 60 cm<2> of flexible, finite system with a delivery rate of 0.5 to 100 mg/24 h resulting in blood levels of methylphenidate that do not vary more than up to 40 % from the mean at steady state for delivery to the skin or mucosa of a patient need thereof over a period of time of at least 10 hours.
