PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new catalyst, and to provide a method for producing a polymer using the same. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polymer comprises subjecting a phenolic monomer to oxidative coupling polymerization using a copper-amine catalyst as the new catalyst. In this method, the copper-amine catalyst is such that a copper compound has been coordinated to an amine, wherein the copper compound is preferably cuprous chloride, cuprous bromide or cuprous iodide, and the amine is preferably an aromatic amine or aliphatic amine. The phenolic monomer consists of a phenolic derivative bearing substituents on its 2- and 5-positions, specifically being preferably 2,5-dimethylphenol, 2,5-diethylphenol or 2,5-diphenylphenol.
