HANDHELD ELECTRONIC DEVICE AND ASSOCIATED METHOD PROVIDING ADVANCED TEXT EDITING FUNCTION IN A TEXT DISAMBIGUATION ENVIRONMENT

A handheld electronic device for providing an advanced text editing function in a text disambiguation environment and a method therefor are provided to remove the necessity of requesting to delete and retype new words which are not correctly disambiguated by the disambiguation routine. A handheld electronic device(4) comprises the followings: a processor apparatus including a processor(36) and a memory(40); an input unit(8) which includes a plurality of input members, and provides inputs to the processor apparatus; and an output device(12) receiving output signals from the processor apparatus. The memory stores a plurality of routines which perform the operation of detecting a predetermined input, and perform the operation of replacing characters of a displayed item with different characters assigned to the input members in response to the predetermined input.
