In the production of a casting (1) in apparatus having two relatively movable molds, where a mold dividing ridge is formed on the separating region of the mold to give an uneven region on the casting, the molds are offset relative to each other in the separating region, so that a stepped region (6), with only a single offset level (61), is formed in the casting by the offset part. An independent claim is included for a cast automobile component, produced using apparatus as above.
