An apparatus and a method for recognizing an error of a toner sensor for a developing device are provided to allow a user to take a proper measure according to a cause of an error, thereby improving the reliability of a toner sensor. A developing device body is detachably installed at a toner container and receives toner supplied from the toner container. A developing device toner amount detecting unit(104) includes a sensor(42) for sensing the amount of toner filled in the developing device body and outputs a sensor value corresponding to the amount of toner. A printer controller(100) recognizes error information related to the toner sensor by comparing the sensor value of the developing device toner amount detecting unit and a pre-set value, and displays the recognized error information. A display unit(105) displays the error information under the control of the printer controller.
