PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the number of bubbles in glass used as a glass substrate for TFT-LCD, organic EL, etc., without using arsenic or antimony. SOLUTION: The glass substrate has a matrix composition comprising SiO<SB>2</SB>, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, MgO, CaO, SrO and BaO and has a sulfur content of 1 ppm or more but less than 0.02% by mass calculated in terms of SO<SB>3</SB>and an Na and/or K content of 0.03% or more but less than 0.1% by mass calculated in terms of R<SB>2</SB>O (wherein R is Na or K) based on the total mass of the matrix composition.
