A method for encoding/decoding a media signal and an apparatus thereof are provided to improve the transmission rate of a media signal by reducing the data necessary for table designation. For N and M of natural numbers, first table index information which displays the tables of M numbers, that frames refer to in practice, among the tables of N numbers that the frames refer to is generated. The first table index information is inserted into a header(201). Second table index information which displays tables, that each frame refer to, among the tables of M numbers. The second table index information is inserted into each frame, and the header and the frame into which the first and second index information are inserted are encoded.
