The self-priming pump assembly has a ventilation pump (2) formed by a reciprocating plunger-type pump which is connected on the pressure side to the ventilation pipe (1.3) and/or outlet pipe (1.2) of the centrifugal pump (1). Both the plunger-type pump and the centrifugal pump have a suction line (3,4) to the fluid which is to be pumped. A non-return valve (6) is set in or at the foot of the suction line. The pump control has a time switch to which the plunger-type pump is connected at the outlet side. Independent claim describes a reciprocating plunger-type pump for a self-priming pump assembly which has a fluid ring seal.
