摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease a driving voltage in a liquid crystal display that controls alignment of liquid crystal molecules by using an approximately horizontal electric field with respect to a transparent substrate. SOLUTION: Liquid crystal molecules M having a negative dielectric anisotropyΔεare held in between a first transparent substrate 10 and a second transparent substrate 20. A first common electrode 14 and an insulating film 15 covering the electrode are disposed on the first transparent substrate 10; and a pixel electrode 16 comprising a plurality of linear portions 16E and slits 16S is disposed on the insulating film 15. The width D1 of the slit 16S is larger than the width D2 of the linear portion 16E. Thereby, a horizontal electric field component between the first common electrode 14 and the pixel electrode 16 is enhanced, which decreases the driving voltage. A common potential or a center potential of the common potential is applied to a second common electrode 24 disposed on the second transparent substrate 20. Thereby, when a display signal is applied to the pixel electrode 16, a vertical electric field component is induced in the liquid crystal layer LC, which keeps the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules M horizontal.
