PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which deterioration of the quality of a previously transferred image is securely prevented in a one-path double sided system. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a first intermediate transfer body 3 and a second intermediate transfer body 15, both of which hold toner images formed by an image forming means; an upstream transfer section which transfers the toner images held on either one of the first and second intermediate transfer bodies 3 and 15 onto one side of recording medium P; a downstream transfer section located downstream of the upstream transfer section in the direction of recording medium conveyance, which transfers the toner images held on the other of the first and second intermediate transfer bodies 3 and 15 onto the other side of the recording medium P. The image forming apparatus passes the recording medium P through the upstream transfer section and the downstream transfer section in order, thereby transferring the toner images held on the first and second transfer bodies 3 and 15 to both the sides of the recording medium. Between the upstream transfer section and the downstream transfer section, rollers 61 and 62 are provided to increase sticking force of the toner images to the recording medium P by heating.
