The invention relates to an apparatus for the powered cutting of a workpiece, typically in the form of a planar or sheet material. The apparatus comprises a base (3) onto which a workpiece to be cut can be placed, a guide means including at least first and second slide members (68, 70), mounted at each end thereof at setting clamps (76, 80) fixed to the base (3), a cutting unit (10), fastened on the guide means and comprising a rotable blade (9), a protection device (96) for said blade, drive means (56) for rotating the blade when switching on the apparatus, and a handle unit (66) for holding and moving the cutting unit. The blade is off the guide means, wherein a locking assembly is provided for operating the apparatus in a first mode, at which the locking assembly is released from the guide means and the cutting unit (10) is movable along the guide means, and in a second mode at which the locking assembly interacts with the guide means, thus fixing the cutting unit in the stationary position relative to the guide means. The cutting unit (10) is shifted to one side of said first and second slide members (68, 70) of the slide means, and a slot (6) is made in the base passing parallel to at least one of said at least two spaced slide members (68, 70), wherein the blade is positioned so that at least its lower part enters into said slot (6) and moves along the slot when moving the cutting unit (10) along said at least two slide members. The protection device (96) is adopted to move between the lowered and raised positions. The apparatus is characterised in that the driving edge of the protection device (96) is adopted to rest against the front surface of the workpiece, wherein the driven edge raises upwards for providing its displacement along the upper surface of the workpiece and passing the blade (9) through the workpiece for cutting when moving the cutting unit (10) along the workpiece in the first operation mode or in moving the workpiece relative to the cutting unit in the second operation mode, wherein the protection device (96) jointly with said slot in the base (3), substantially, surrounds the blade and comprises a tightening member to tighten the protection device (96) in the direction of the lowered position providing a touch with the base (3), wherein when the workpiece is positioned between the lower side of said apparatus and the base it resists the tightening member, thus the protection device moves in the raised position, wherein to said at least two slide members (68, 70) a bearing unit is fixed for moving the cutting unit (10) longitudinally parallel to said elements in moving the blade (9) along said slot (6), wherein the blade (9) rotation axis is retained at the constant height relative to the base. |
