The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the quality control of a multiplicity of melt-spun fibre strands of a fibre tow in a staple fibre process. For this purpose, fibre strands of the fibre tow are guided one beside the other, and parallel to one another, in band form and are jointly crimped and cut to form staple fibres. Prior to the cutting operation, at least one surface property of the fibre tow is detected and analyzed. In order to uncover possible abnormalities within the fibre tow, the invention provides for a surface temperature of the fibre strands of the fibre tow to be sensed over the surface area, or linearly in a direction transverse to the fibre tow, and analyzed.
