Air is fed to the cell cathode (2) using a fan (7) or compressor. Cathode exhaust gas discharges through a control valve (10) to a burner (6). Exhaust gas from the anode (1) is supplied through a pipe (5) to the burner. Residual oxygen and hydrogen in the exhaust gases burn, the heat produced being extracted by a heat exchanger (12). If additional air is required this can be supplied by the fan through a pipe (14) connected to the control valve
