PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more inexpensive high-yield method for producing Guerbet alcohol from an aliphatic alcohol accompanied with little by-production of soaps.SOLUTION: The method for producing Guerbet alcohol includes reacting a primary and/or a secondary aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a basic catalyst (A) containing an alkaline metal or an alkaline earth metal and a cocatalyst (B) containing elemental zinc, wherein the cocatalyst (B) is the following (b-1) and/or (b-2). (b-1): A solid metal oxide containing a zinc compound, aluminum and one metal element selected from metal elements belonging to periodic table (long period type) groups 4, 8, and 10. (b-2): A solid composite metal oxide containing the elemental zinc, aluminum and one or more metal elements selected from metal elements belonging to periodic table (long period type) groups 4, 8, and 10. |
