PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a compression system for, especially, pulse light by improving a probe light type optical analog-to-digital converting device and method. SOLUTION: An optical pulse compressor 110 compresses output light of a pulse light source (seed laser) 100 to generate optical sampling pulses 20 for sampling an analog input signal 10. An optical divider 130 divides the sampling pulse light, and one is input to an optical sampler 120 to be used as sampling pulse. The other passes through a second pulse optical compressor 140 to have a narrower pulse width, and thus second compressed pulse light 40 is generated.
