<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference control member in which a phase difference layer is made to act as a transparent protective layer and to function optical compensation for the phase difference of light caused by a polarizing plate, and to provide a liquid crystal display in which the above member is assembled, and a liquid crystal material composition for forming the above member. <P>SOLUTION: In the phase difference control member 1, the optical axis of a phase difference layer 4 stands against a plane having a normal in the thickness direction of the phase difference layer (4) and a surface step amount T of the phase difference layer 4 is smaller than 500 nm. When an x-axis and y-axis perpendicular to each other are defined in the plane and a z-axis is defined in the normal direction, with refractive indices represented by nx, ny and nz in the x, y and z axis directions, respectively, a coefficient P defined by P=(nz-((nx+ny)/2)) based on the nx, ny and nz for light at a wavelength 589 nm and the thickness d (nm) satisfy all of expressions (1):0.005≤P≤0.04, (2):d≤2000 and (3):10≤P×d≤40. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
