<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a test for evaluating a risk of developing future diabetes or complications of diabetes in an individual. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to methods for characterizing an individual's risk profile of developing future diabetes or complications of diabetes. The method includes a step of obtaining a level of an inflammatory marker in the individual. Preferred inflammatory markers include C reactive protein and interleukin-6.
