PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good image through simple processing without generating any displacement of pixels when performing so-called digital dodging. SOLUTION: With respect to an image processing method, a luminance image is created in a luminance extracting portion 101 by extracting the luminance component of an input image, and reduction image is created in a reduction portion 110 by reducing the luminance image. In this case, in the reduction portion 110, the reduction processing of pixels present in the end area of the luminance image which does not satisfy a reduction factor relative to reduction processing is also performed. Also, an expansion image is created in an expanding portion 141 by expanding the reduction image input through LPF 121-123 up to the same resolution as the luminance image. In this case, in the expanding portion 141, the defecting pixels present in the end area of the expansion image are interpolated by the pixels adjacent to the defecting pixels and processing for cutting off the excessive pixels in the end area of the expansion image is also performed.
