<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely adsorb HC or NO<SB>x</SB>contained in exhaust gas during cold start of an internal combustion engine, in an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: A bypass passage 28 is branched from a main exhaust passage 16 of the internal combustion engine 10. A switching device 26 switches between exhaust gas passages of the main exhaust passage 16 and the bypass passage 28. A water adsorbent 36 is disposed on the bypass passage 28. On the bypass passage 28, a first HC adsorbent 38 is disposed downstream of the water adsorbent 36, a second HC adsorbent 40 is disposed downstream the first HC adsorbent, and a NO<SB>x</SB>absorbent 42 is disposed downstream the second HC adsorbent 40. A purge control system is constituted so that purge operation can be individually performed in the order of arrangement from the NO<SB>x</SB>adsorbent 42 disposed downstream. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
