A superconducting magnet emergency quench system comprises at least one electrical resistor 15 - 18 associated with a superconducting coil 11 - 14 of a magnet. Electrical energy is supplied to the resistor to generate heat which will start a quench. The electrical energy is supplied from an electricity generator 20 driven by mechanically stored energy. In a further arrangement the electrical energy is supplied to the resistor 15 - 18 from an electricity generator driven directly by manual actuation. Various electric generating arrangements involving a magnetic field and linear or rotational relative movement between certain components of the magnet, piezoelectric material, a permanent magnet and gearing arrangements may be devised. A quench may alternatively be initiated by an externally-introduced object arranged to strike the coil and impart sufficient energy to induce a quench or a jet of gas, at a temperature higher than that of the superconducting coil transition temperature, may be directed on to the said coil. The quench system may be a replaceable single use system or a re-usable system. A frangible member may be used to activate the quench system and a visual indication of the actuation may be provided. The above emergency run-down arrangements for a superconducting magnet may be provided as back-up means to the normal electric mains or battery driven arrangements. |
