<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate or moderate a release response delay of neutral control, by determining a release of neutral control in an early stage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A neutral control release determination brake fluid pressure Pbend is made higher than a conventional fixed value, when the neutral control is release-operated in case of reducing a brake fluid pressure Pb as shown in Fig., during a period where an automatic transmission is brought into a neutral state, by satisfying a prescribed condition, under a stop state where a brake is actuated by the brake fluid pressure Pb, even in a D range. The release of the neutral control is thereby determined during the reduction of a braking force (brake fluid pressure Pb) at an instantaneous time t1 earlier than a conventional instantaneous time t2. Consequently, a great restoration response delay at a low temperature to a power transmittable state of the automatic transmission in response to the control release determination of the neutral control is set off or at least moderated, as clear from an elevation tendency of start friction element operation pressures Pf, Pr shown by a solid line.
