<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a magnetic recording medium which is nearly free from contamination of a magnetic layer and includes excellent magnetic separation properties of a magnetic recording pattern. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for producing the magnetic recording medium 30 having the magnetic recording pattern 4b which is magnetically separated, after laminating at least a magnetic layer 6 and a carbon protective layer 5 on a non-magnetic substrate 1 in this order, the surface where the carbon protective layer 5 is formed is partially irradiated with a reactive plasma including carbon and a halogen or reactive ions which are generated in the reactive plasma, for forming a halogenated carbon protective layer 5a wherein a part of the carbon protective layer 5 is halogenated, and forming the magnetic recording pattern 4b wherein a part of the magnetic layer 6 is modified to be magnetically separated.
