PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a situation where a user is irradiated with light from an illumination device.SOLUTION: An illumination device comprises: a body part that is removably attached to an imaging device; a movable part that can be rotated with respect to the body part; a light emitting part that is provided in the movable part; driving means that rotates the movable part; a detection sensor for detecting an object within a detection range; and setting means that sets a limit angle limiting a rotation angle when the driving means rotates the movable part according to an output from the detection sensor. The detection sensor is arranged on a surface of the body part on the opposite side of a surface on a subject side while the body part is attached to the imaging device; the setting means decreases the limit angle when the output from the detection sensor indicates that an object is not detected within the detection range compared with when the output from the detection sensor indicates that an object is detected within the detection range.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
