The invention relates to a method for generating a series of notes of a scale with a finite number of notes on the basis of a name comprising characters, wherein the characters are chosen from a set of characters, with the following steps of: determining a starting point on a scale and assigning a note from the scale to each character of the name on the basis of a predetermined relation between character and note. Not only is a method per se forming part of the prior art automated as a result of these measures, but the option is moreover provided of generating a much greater number of melodies.
