PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium exhibiting excellent recording characteristics in a high density recording. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium used for magnetically recording signals with≤2.0μm track width and reproducing the magnetically recorded signals and having a magnetic layer including hexagonal ferrite ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic support or a non-magnetic layer including non-magnetic powder and a binder and the magnetic layer including the hexagonal ferrite ferromagnetic powder and the binder in this order on the non-magnetic support substrate, the magnetic layer has≤0.2μm thickness and the average plate diameter of the hexagonal ferrite ferromagnetic powder is 1/30 times as large as the magnetically recorded track width or below and is 1/2 times as large as the thickness of the magnetic layer or below.
