An apparatus and a method for inputting characters are provided to allow a user to input double consonants conveniently when characters are input by using a special function key, thereby reducing character input time. An apparatus for inputting characters includes a key pad(110), a controller(140), and a display module(150). The key pad(110) includes special functional keys in order to input character keys, a blank, and double consonants. The controller(140) displays a blank, or double consonants according to the type of characters corresponding to the input character key. The display module(150) displays corresponding characters under the control of the controller(140). The special functional key is one of functional keys allocated with * or #.
