The purpose of the present invention is to provide a washing machine and a method for controlling a washing machine, wherein the whole region inside an outer tub can be washed cleanly. The method for controlling a washing machine according to the present invention comprises the steps of: (a) supplying water into an outer tub to a first set water level; (b) rotating an inner tub so that a filter arranged between the outer tub and an opening part formed in the lower part of the inner tub can be washed by a stream of water; (c) supplying water so that a water level in the outer tub can rise from the first set water level to a second set water level; and (d) rotating the inner tub so that water between the inner tub and the outer tub can be raised by a centrifugal force above the upper end of the inner tub to pour into the inner tub.
