PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device that enables a user to certainly notify the device of the size of a document placed on a document placement part with a simple operation even when the device does not include a detection sensor detecting the size of the document, an image forming apparatus, and an image reading method.SOLUTION: An image reading device 300 comprises: a document set part 65 on which a document can be placed; an ADF (Auto Document Feeder) 60 that can feed the document placed on the document set part 65 to a document reading position L1; size sensors 92A-92D and size detection processing part 102 that detect the size of the document placed on the document set part 65; a storage processing part 103 that stores size information indicating the detected size of the document in a detection information storage area 112; a reading unit 41 that scans a reading face of a document placed on a contact glass 40 to read an image; and a size setting part 106 that sets the size information stored in the detection information storage area 112 as size information to be used in reading processing performed by a scanner part 3.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
