PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the posture of a recording sheet after toner image transfer in an image forming apparatus which electrostatically transfers a toner image to the recording sheet. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has an intermediate transfer belt 22 having a carrying surface where the toner image is carried, a cylindrical transfer roller 24 which has its surface applied with a prescribed voltage, is pressed against the carrying surface to form a nip, and rotates in synchronism with movement of the carrying surface, and a plate type releasing electrode 27 which is nearly as wide as the transfer roller 24, provided downstream from the nip, and grounded or applied with a bias voltage. The releasing electrode 27 has a section, cut by a plane containing the direction of the axis of rotation of the transfer roller 24 as a normal, in such a shape that the releasing electrode 27 has one end disposed closer to the transfer roller 24 than to a tangent to a point of contact between the carrying surface and transfer roller 24, also has the other end disposed closer to the intermediate transfer belt 22 than to the tangent and also downstream from the one end, and curves from the one end to the other end to be convex to the nip side.
