<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly efficient light-emitting element whose light extraction efficiency can be drastically improved, which can shorten time required in a manufacturing process, and which can be manufactured inexpensively. <P>SOLUTION: A light-emitting element comprises a semiconductor layer 5 comprising a laminated body in which a first conductivity type gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor layer 5a, a light-emitting layer 5b comprising a gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor, and a second conductivity type gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor layer 5c are sequentially laminated. In the light-emitting element, a convexo-concave structure 6 comprising protrusions isolated from each other is regularly formed on the front surface of any one or more of the first conductivity type gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor layer 5a and the second conductivity type gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor layer 5c.
