PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing an organic acid or its derivative which improves the rate of the oxidation reaction even under milder reaction conditions and moreover remarkably improves all the conversion of the reaction, the selectivity and yield of PTA and the like. SOLUTION: The process for preparing an organic acid or its derivative comprises subjecting a hydrocarbon substrate to oxidation treatment with the use of an MC-type homogenous catalyst selected from Co/Br, Mn/Br, Co/Mn/Br, and Co/Mn/M/Br and an O2/CO2mixed gas oxidizing agent whose oxygen partial pressure is adjusted to 30-40%.
