<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pile fabric having a sufficient napping length of pile fiber and a distinct step between a long pile fiber layer and a short pile fiber layer, and a method for producing the pile fabric. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The pile fabric 1 includes long pile fibers 2 and short pile fibers 3. The short pile fiber 3 contains a fiber (A) having a napping length less than 40 mm, a single fiber fineness of 7.8-22 dtex, and a flatness ratio defined by the short axis length to long axis length in the cross section of 1:4 to 1:15, and the fiber (A) has a napping length shorter by 10% or more than that of the long pile fiber 2. The method for producing the pile fabric 1 includes a step of cutting pile fibers containing the fiber (A) in the pile fabric into the same length, and a step of forming the short pile fiber 3 by shrinking the fiber (A) by heat treatment.
