PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method capable of preventing the occurrence of stepwise coating irregularity on the surface of a coating layer even in the case of thin layer coating, especially thin layer coating with a wet film thickness of 25μm or below, and a coating apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: A coating solution is thinly applied to a web 12 fed using a suction drum 16 as a standard drive by a coating machine 20 having a coating roller 18. This coating apparatus 10 is constituted so that a multipolar motor 32 is used as a motor for rotationally driving the suction drum 16 and the coating roller 18, and the suction drum 16 and the coating roller 18 are directly driven by the multipolar motor 32.
