PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization element that has a desired extinction ratio in a visible light region and has resistance against strong light, and a liquid crystal projector using the polarization element.SOLUTION: A polarization element comprises: a substrate transparent to visible light; a reflection layer that is formed of metal and has band-like thin films extending in one direction provided on the substrate at a constant interval; a dielectric layer that is formed on the reflection layer; and an inorganic fine particle layer that has inorganic fine particles linearly arranged. The inorganic fine particle layer is formed on both side faces continuing from the apex of band-like thin films on the dielectric at a position corresponding to the band-like thin films and has a wire grid structure having the longitudinal direction the same as a direction where the inorganic fine particles are linearly arranged.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
