The device (14) has a rotatable encoder (18) that is connected to a rotatable unit (10). An optically detectable marker (26) is located at a radial distance (38) from the rotational axis (22,30) of the encoder. An illumination unit (40) detects the outgoing radiation from the optical marker. An optical sensor (32) is provided for rotational angle-dependent detection of the optical marker during rotation of the encoder. The encoder has a peripheral surface in which the optical marker is provided.
