METHOD AND SYSTEM TO SYNCHRONIZE A GSM DEVICE

A global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile station (205) acquires and decodes a frequency channel (FCH) signal using unallocated frames in a half-rate traffic channel in a GSM network (215). The mobile station 205 also uses the unallocated frames to acquire and decode a synchronization channel (SCH) signal and to verify a base station identification code (BSIC) from the neighbor cell using the unallocated frames in the half-rate traffic channel. When the base station identification code (BSIC) is verified, the mobile station (205) is synchronized and hands off to the neighbor cell.
