The present invention relates to a portable, modular knitting machine capable of surrounding an object. In particular, said machine includes: - a plurality of so-called "needle" modules (1) that each include at least one needle (10) and a needle holder (11), said modules being connected to one other by hinge links (110) so as to form a chain assembly; - a plurality of protective, guide, and slide housings (15, 16) for said needle modules (1), said housings being connected to one another by at least one hinge link so as to together form a closed outline matching the outer shape of the object to be surrounded; and - at least one motor-driven module (17) substituted for at least one protective housing and engaging with the plurality of needle modules (1) so as to ensure the relative mobility of the needle modules with respect to the closed outline.
