A 3D printer (10) having a coater (30) and a coater cleaning devise (50) is disclosed, wherein the coater (30) defines a container (32), which has an inner cavity (34) for receiving particulate construction material and an elongated dispensing area (36) for dispensing the particulate construction material and which can be moved to a cleaning position in which it is arranged above the coater cleaning device (50), wherein the coater cleaning device (50) has a wiping element (54) and a drive device for moving the wiping element, and wherein the drive device is designed for moving the wiping element (54) for cleaning the dispensing area (36) along same when the coater (30) is above the coater cleaning device (50). A method for cleaning a coater of a 3D printer is therefore disclosed.
