Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for detecting multiple targets in a non-homogenous clutter environment using modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics. The apparatus of the present invention comprises: a sample data PPS module calculating PPS data by performing a pre-whitening projection statistics (PPS) algorithm as to sample data iteratively; a covariance matrix update module which classifies the PPS data calculated by iteratively performing the algorithm into homogenous PPS data and non-homogeneous PPS data by comparing the calculated PPS data with a predetermined threshold value, and updates a covariance matrix using the classified homogeneous PPS data; a total data PPS module performing the pre-whitening projection statistics algorithm as to the total received data using the updated covariance matrix; and a non-homogeneous data removal module removing the classified non-homogeneous PPS data, after performing the pre-whitening projection statistics algorithm as to the total received data. By the apparatus and the method for detecting the multiple targets in the non-homogeneous clutter environment using the modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics, an error due to degradation during estimation of the covariance matrix can be prevented, and high calculation complexity is not required. Also, the apparatus and the method of the present invention has the effect of reducing a target detection error due to a masking effect, by showing excellent multiple targets detection performance in various clutter environments. |
