PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain reduction of shocks and protection of a clutch by suitably controlling connection force of the clutch in a transmission according to speed of a vehicle and the number of rotation of an engine when the engine again accelerates from an automatically stopped state before the vehicle stops completely. SOLUTION: In a control unit of a vehicle having the engine and automatic transmission connected with the engine, the control unit includes an automatic stop determination unit for determining whether or not the engine is automatically stopped in response to operating conditions of the vehicle, an engine automatic stop unit for automatically stopping the engine when determining that the engine is automatically stopped, a restart determination unit for determining whether or not the stopped engine starts again, and an engine restart unit for restarting the engine when determining that the engine is restarted. Speed of the vehicle is detected by a vehicle speed detection unit. When restarting the engine, fastening force of the clutch for a starting shift of the automatic transmission, which is connected before the engine is automatically stopped, is controlled by a fastening force control unit in response to speed of the vehicle.
