<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately recognize the direction of an edge to accurately interpolate an image. <P>SOLUTION: A direction determination part 123 recognizes the direction of the edge of an intended pixel, and outputs it with the position of the intended pixel to a reliability rating part 124 and a directivity distribution generation part 125. A direction interpolation part 131 interpolates the direction of the intended pixel. The reliability rating part 124 determines whether the interpolated pixel interpolated by the direction interpolation part 131 is adequate or not, rates the reliability thereof, and outputs the result to the directivity distribution generation part 125. The directivity distribution generation part 125 generates a directivity distribution based on the information on direction and the information on reliability. An inclination selection part 126 recognizes the direction of the edge based on the directivity distribution from the generation part 125.
