The method involves setting alertness potential on a starting value depending on an actuation of a control element (12) by a driver. The alertness potential is reduced with a setting velocity. The setting velocity is determined under consideration of the actual data of a sensor or other vehicle system. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle with a controller.
