<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a backlight compact by shortening a distance from a point light source to an effective light emitting area. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device is provided with the backlight, and a liquid crystal display panel arranged on the observer's side of the backlight. In the liquid crystal display device, the backlight includes a light guide plate, the point light source arranged on the side face of the light guide plate, and an outgoing light control plate arranged on the liquid crystal display panel side of the light guide plate. The outgoing light control plate has a plurality of projections of which the cross-sectional forms are at least partly circular-arc shaped, on the light guide plate side surface. The outgoing light control plate is arranged on the surface of the liquid crystal display panel side of the light guide plate with the projections closely stuck to the liquid crystal display panel side surface of the light guide plate.
