PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which improves compression rate of a still picture in simultaneous moving picture/still picture recording. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises: a moving picture compressing unit 50; the number of pixels converting means 60; a differential means 65, a still picture compressing means 85; and a still picture information adding means 85. When the moving picture compressing section 50 performs simultaneous recording, a predictive reference image which is generated when compressing a moving picture, is outputted, the number of pixels of the predictive reference image is converted by the number of pixels converting means 60, a differential is obtained by the differential means 65 in order to reduce information of the still picture, and the still picture is compressed by the still picture compressing means 85, thereby improving compression rate of the still picture.
