<p>The sensor has a magnetic field-sensitive giant magneto resistive (GMR) sensor unit (28) provided in a housing (26). The housing has a magnetic field source associated with the GMR sensor unit. The source is accommodated in a shield that encloses the source in a U-shape. The source, the sensor unit, and/or the housing are tilted at a specified distance and by a predetermined angle relative to a reference plane of a scale.
