A lighting unit with a switch comprises a circuit board (5) having at least one lamp (1) and at least one switch (3), an extended light distribution element (9) and a flexible one-piece spacer (7) between circuit board and distributor with recesses for light and switch elements. The light distributor is so arranged that it transmits externally applied pressure to the switch and that an equal switching effect is obtained independently of where the light distribution element is pressed. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle number plate comprising a lighting unit as above.
