PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a magnetic recording medium which can be satisfactorily washed by preventing floating of the substrate for the magnetic recording medium in a washing step. SOLUTION: The substrate for the magnetic recording medium has a disk like shape and is made of resin as a base material. The substrate has a specific gravity higher than that of a detergent used in the washing step. For example, the specific gravity is made to be 1.2 or more by incorporating a filler material of an inorganic material into the substrate or by forming a metal layer on the surface of the substrate. Thereby, the substrate for the magnetic recording medium can be satisfactorily washed since the substrate for the magnetic recording medium sinks in the detergent.
